Paralisis Permanente

Remember my post about Alaska y los Pegamoides? Well, two of the Pegamoides, Nacho Canut and Eduardo Benavente, formed the band Parálisis Permanente in 1980. While they continued playing ironic new wave pop with the Pegamoides, Parálisis Permanente was fast becoming one of the first successful goth punk bands in Spain. Heavily influenced by UK punk and post-punk bands (like Killing Joke and Joy Division), Parálisis Permanente was part of Spain's burgeoning onda siniestra (or "dark wave") movement in the early 1980s.

Eduardo Benavente of Paralisis Permanente

Who's a cute little goth boy? Eduardo Benavente of Parálisis Permanente

Eduardo had played the drums for the Pegamoides but he was the guitarist and singer for Parálisis Permanente. As their popularity rose, he devoted more and more time and energy to Parálisis Permanente. Nacho Canut quit the band in early 1981 after some kind of disagreement. Ana Curra, another one of the Pegamoides and Eduardo's girlfriend, began to collaborate with Parálisis Permanente and eventually joined the band officially when the Pegamoides dissolved to form the electropop band, Alaska y Dinarama. Read the biography and get all of the incestuous details here, or refer to this more detailed bio in Spanish.

Let's go to youtube for some videos:

Autosuficiencia

I am in love with this song. The lyrics are based on the Sex Pistols' "No Feelings." It starts out, Me miro en el espejo y soy feliz (I look in the mirror and I'm happy). It's a parody, but at the time people apparently took it seriously. Musically, it reminds me of the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen" and the Buzzcocks' "What Do I Get". Unfortunately, this is their only real video.

Tengo un Pasajero

This is a live version of their song that is based on the movie Alien (!). Tengo un pasajero dentro de mi cuerpo means, I have a passenger in my body.

Quiero Ser Santa

Here's another great live performance. The title translates as, I want to be a (female) saint. It's a funny song about being a Catholic martyr:
Quiero que cuando me muera,
mi cuerpo quede incorrupto
y que todos los que me vean,
queden muertos de susto.

Translation:
I want that when I die,
my body stays undecayed
and that everyone who sees me
dies of fright.
This song was written by Alaska and Ana Curra.

The album Singles y Primeras Grabaciones is not hard to find and it's excellent, though "Tengo un Pasajero" isn't on it.

Parálisis Permanente only recorded a couple of EPs, an LP, and a 7-inch before the band came to an abrupt demise. Eduardo Benavente died in a car crash on May 14th, 1983. He was 20 years old.
